Stone care

Sandstone is formed when pressure is applied to quartz grains (sand) and other minerals (including calcium, clay, silica and iron oxides) over many years. It can vary in colour from almost pure white and light brown/orange through to red. Combinations of colours can also be found, including some pieces with natural fossils. 'Banding' is a term used in the sandstone industry to describe the subtle lines in sandstone that can also range to heavier, denser patterns.

Each individual piece of sandstone is unique, which is part of the material's inherent beauty.

Sandstone is a naturally porous rock, which means that it can be susceptible to stains. Even though the Himalayan sandstone distributed by Hayda is much less likely to stain because it is very dense, we do recommend the use of a penetrating sealer to help protect your investment and prolong the 'just laid' look of your sandstone.

There are many different sandstone cleaners on the market, but prevention is better than cure. We advise all our customers to use a reputable sandstone sealer and to follow the manufacturer's instructions for when to reapply. If you need more information or would like us to refer you to a sealing specialist for your project, please do not hesitate to contact us directly.

What does a sandstone sealer do?

Applying a sealer to sandstone does not make the rock stain proof, but it does make it much more stain resistant. Stains occur where water (discoloured or not) is able to seep from the surface into the stone itself. The marks left behind can be difficult to remove. A good sealer will help prevent the water getting into the stone.
